Did they have the gearcase removed during cleanup? May have left the exhaust tube seals out

Engine was pop and die on idle while not in gear. Today, it did same when in gear at 1,000 rpms

a pop or puff sound, like missing. So it is progressing from only doing it in idle and not in gear to being in gear at 1000 rpms. When I run it, it runs great.

Nechanic has not responded. Probably closed for the new years.
