Article: Fallen Overboard?

Are You Tossed To and Fro or Experiencing an Even Flow?

On of the biggest challenges in life today is to keep things on an even keel. Life is filled with up and downs, serenity and turmoil, drudgery and ecstasy, pleasure and pain -- sometimes all in the same day. Not only is this true of life, it is true in marriage, business and almost all other relationships. How do you stay levelheaded when all those around you are losing theirs?

Four Keys To a Stable, Consistent Life

  • Watch Whom You Listen To - "God blesses those people who refuse evil advice ….” - There are times in our lives that we seek advice from other people. There are many sources of advice that are out there. Volumes of books are written about almost every subject from business leadership to familial relations. The question to evaluate all counsel is: Does it square with God's Word? That is the ultimate question.
  • Watch Who You Follow & Spend Time With - "God blesses those people who... won't follow sinners and won't join in sneering at God. " - You can tell a lot by a person when you find out who his heroes are. Who is your hero? Who is your mentor? Who is it you look to and say, "I wanna be like him!" We can look to Jesus Christ and say, I want to live like Him. Be careful whom you emulate. John 13:15 (NIV) "I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you."Be careful who you spend time with. You cannot run with the dogs and not get fleas. You cannot roll in the mud with the swine and expect to remain clean. You cannot soar with the eagles when you have been playing with the turkeys! (Proverbs 14:7 CEV) "Stay away from fools, or you won't learn a thing."
  • Choose To Follow God's Laws - "God blesses those people who ... the Law of the Lord makes them happy…."What rules do you play by, the worlds rules or God's rules? Your answer will effect the way you raise your children, run your business or treat your spouse. (Psalm 37:3 para) "Trust in the Lord and do what is right; if you do this God will bless your life."
  • Concentrate On Pleasing Him - "God blesses those people who… think about it day and night." - Who are you ultimately trying to please? Are you living for the here and now or storing up treasure in heaven? Are your values temporal or eternal?
"God blesses those people who refuse evil advice and won't follow sinners or join in sneering at God. Instead, the Law of the Lord makes them happy and they think about it day and night." Psalm 1:1-2

Thanks Mark. I have a questions for you.

Certainly, we need to be careful who we look up to and emulate. But, isn't there a balance? Even Jesus sought out sinners. If Christians hung out only with Christians, The Word would never get spread. Right?
Quote:
Passage Matthew 9:9-13:

The Calling of Matthew

9As Jesus went on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax collector's booth. "Follow me," he told him, and Matthew got up and followed him.

10While Jesus was having dinner at Matthew's house, many tax collectors and "sinners" came and ate with him and his disciples. 11When the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples, "Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and 'sinners'?" 12On hearing this, Jesus said, "It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. 13But go and learn what this means: 'I desire mercy, not sacrifice.'For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners."

I guess my question is.... How do we find the balance?

Great Question!

Great question - I guess the issue boils down as to whom is influencing whom? If I have a relationship that is constantly pulling me away from God and godly things - I might want to carefully evaluate or rethink that relationship. However, if as part of a relationship - I am able to lead that person closer to God - then that I believe is a good thing!

Something else to consider. There are people I choose not to habitually hang out with that are incredibly negative - about everything. I just get tired of them slinging their sewage on me - because I find myself starting to stink too! (grin) I do not exclude them - but I don't choose to "hang out" with them all the time either.

I have a couple of more thoughts about the company a person keeps - but I have rambled on enough for one post.

Does this help?

If I may. It is true that Jesus ate with and visited the unsaved, we are supposed to do that too, in hopes of spreading the gospel. However Jesus spent the inordinate amount of his time with his disciples and supporters. Read Psalms 1. I believe it is clear that we are to spend most of our time with like minded people. It goes along with the not being unequally yoked teaching. God will put people into our lives for us to witness to.

Friday a Home Depot driver delivered a semi of ceiling tile to one of our jobs. He rather timidly gave me a Christian themed business card at the end explaining that, I have to be careful who I give these to because some people get offended. Before he left he told us how his 19 year old son is trying to decide whether or not to go into youth ministry. He told us that his church has no pastor and they are trying to get the right one. Him, a coworker of mine, and I joined hands on that construction site, all dirty and sweaty and prayed in agreement for those things. We were all uplifted by that chance encounter.

I believe that as long as we are ready and willing to do God's work, he will provide the right balance.

You haven't rambled on enough for me, but I'll settle for this for now. Love your short, to the point answers. Be looking for more. Thanks again.

Thanks Mark. Those were pretty much my feelings. Although, I was curious about your opinion on the subject. And I felt the question might help clarify for others too. Thanks again.

Great article!

Sometimes I forget just how relevant every word in the Bible can be to every single moment in my life! Thanks for the reminder!
