What can you tell me about this revolver?

The "First Revolver" thread got me interested... what can you experts tell me about this gun? It was my father's, I have no history on it...

Swing the cylinder out and look on crane where it meet together in front of cylinder. Most will have model number there. Then look that model up

Looks like a S&W M&P .38 Special 5 screw snubby to me. Square grip, diamond magna grips, diamond cut into the grips.

What concerns me is the serial number. The number on the bottom of the grip frame should match the numbers on the cylinder crane and they don't on your Dad's revolver.

In any case it's a shooter so enjoy it. The picture shows a round butt revolver like yours and not the square butt that you have.

Thanks! There is a number on the cylinder that matches the number on the bottom of the grip.

How old would this gun be?

In one picture it looks like a 5 screw. Is there a screw in front of the trigger guard?

Oh and your revolver was produced sometime between 1948 and 1952.

You can contact S&W and for a fee they will send you a letter that will tell you the day it was built, the day it was shipped, where it was shipped to and will tell you the finish and grips that were on it when it left.

Did you get anywhere with your search for info? There is a forun, Smit&wessonforum.com that can help. These folks have a wealth of info on all things S&W. Some who even work/worked for S&W.

Up until sometime in the 70s I think, the number on the crane of a S&W WAS NOT the serial number and didn't match the number on the butt, which was the serial number.
I think that all changed because of the feds NCIC records requirement and too many LEOs entering wrong serial numbers on stolen gun reports.
The gun pictured, looks to be a M&P K frame S&W square butt 2 inch barrel in 38 special with a factory nickel finish. The N on the crane signifies nickel finish.
S&W made a train load of them.
