2007 Yamaha F250; do I REALLY have to use 89 octane?

A questions for the pros out there. The manual says to use 89 octane in my outboard, and I have been doing that for 2 years now. Now I'm wondering if it's overkill or if it's really necessary. Am I risking damage to the motor if I use 87 octane?

I was told that it won’t hurt the engine to use 87 but you won’t get the full 250hp if you don’t

250 sho

I use 89 when it's available but probably half the time I've used 87 because that's all that was available in small coastal town. I stick with what the manual says which is essentially the above.

I have always used 87 octane in my 2007 250hp Yamaha and haven’t had issues with it, has around 800 hrs on it.

What octane is non ethanol fuel generally? Getting carved motor back soon and going to run blue light fuel only from now on.
