Apache Open Office

I have been using this software for years without a problem. Now, when I try to open a file, it is "read only". It appears that Microsoft wants me to buy Office so I can edit my existing files!
I looked at problem solving, and it always says "disable read only option". well, when I try this, it is not "highlighted" to click on it. Then it goes back to trying to sell me Office.
It is like my files are being held ransom unless I pay up! Help!!

Is it write protected? Click the file explorer, then properties. The read only attribute should be a checkbox near the bottom left of the dialog. Untick.

If it's a file you downloaded, it might have it password protected to prevent someone from editing..usually F5 will allow you to uncheck the protected file and then make edits. Been a while since I've done any work in openoffice but think that was the way
