Curado 100D grind while reeling in?

I have an older curado 100D that has been a wonderful reel for many years. A few weeks ago I was using it and one of the last casts for the day, it started to grind upon reeling in? Could this be the pinion gear, main gear or both?

Also, with this being an older reel, are parts available? I haven’t decided whether to repair it myself or sell it?

I'd just sell it if I were you and I'll be the guy to buy it. You deserve one of these new fancy reels with electronic brakes and what not.


Grinding could be numerous things, start off with removing the spool and wiping it all down. I've had them do the same thing and it was just grime on the spool making the noise. You could open in up and inspect the gears see if there is any wear or shiny spots on the teeth indicating that they are grinding on each other.

That reel has an aluminum drive gear and a brass pinion gear. Over time and after exposire to saltwater the teeth on the drive gear will be eaten down by galvanic corrosion due to dissimilar metals. The even worse news is that the pinion gear for that reel is no longer available and if you want a smooth retrieve you have to replace both the drive and pinion gears together.

I like the 100/101D series. You can swap out the gear set with brass (if you can find them) but first thing check your bearings. Those you can replace.
