Yeah, I'm thinking I'll go for the 2500. Seems a good combination of weight and line capacity.

DAIWA BG!!! In either a 2500, 3000, or even a 2000 size. No one ever mentions the sloppy line lay the Battle II still has, unacceptable for a $100+ reel. If you get it on sale or cheaper then it's a great buy, but I wouldn't pay full retail.

The Penn Battle II can definitely handle a dunking in saltwater because that's where you'll end up chucking at after the 5th wind knot in an hour.

This video is long but he does a very good job of actually breaking down the reels and showing you the guts instead of just turning the handle, flipping the bail, and turning the drag knob and saying that it's a great reel and they've caught hundreds of fish on it. He talks about line lay at about the 24 or 24:30 mark. Worth watching over several sits if you don't want to listen to a guy talking about reels for an hour straight.

Interesting you brought this up. For the last couple of days I've been going back and forth between the BII and the BG. Most reviews Ive seen give the Battle the slight edge. Very slight, and mainly because of the sealed bearings. Think I'll take a trip to FTU and look at both before I make up my mind for sure.

Spend a few bucks more and get a Penn Clash. You can get them for about $129, sometimes less. Among other things, it doesn't have the line lay problems mentioned above. Very nice reels.

I have Battle IIs and BGs. All of them 2500s.

OK, when new they are both about the same. They both have good drags, both smooth. Very equal in performance. As time went on I had one issue with the BGs, they got water under the spool and there is a bearing under the rotor that rusted on 5 of the 6 I have. These reels have never been waded with. All boat fishing. Never been dunked. I have never sprayed them with a heavy stream of water, just mist them off with a fine spray of water to clean up after fishing. But somehow water got in them all and 5 of the 6 I have had a bearing rust and go bad.

The Battle IIs have been used in the same manner. Never waded with. Never dunked. Cleaned up the same way. Same tear down and clean routine. They have held up better. I have not had a single one come up with a problem of any sort in a year of use. Usually I get about a year out of a set of reels and they are shot. The Battle IIs have held up great and are still rolling. Still very smooth. Drags are still great. No issues at all.

One other thing is the Battle II, at least for me, is easier to tear down to clean and lube. I hate tearing the BGs all the way down.

I also think the Penn line lay is a non-issue and greatly overstated by the BG fans. My BGs would stack line up on one side of the spool really badly until I added a bunch of spacers to push the spool out farther. The Penns have laid line nice and level and I never had to do anything with them. All of mine were ready to roll right out of the box. On the BGs I had to mess with them awhile to figure out how many spacers I had to use to get the line to lay level.

I like both reels and I think the BG is a fine reel but it isn't better than the Battle II.
