First Revolver

S&W model 65-3 .357 magnum with 3 inch barrel. Already have a set of Altamont grips on the way, though the original grips are growing on me. looking at Holsters and cannot quite decide what i want. I know i want something OWB and concealable. Probably going to borrow some different designs to try. Got it for <$400 so i think i did ok. The main spring, trigger, and hammer all look new and the trigger pull is smooth on double action and by my guess ~2.5 lbs on single action. it is pretty beat up and scratched, but for a first revolver i think its a start. up until know i've mostly played with polymer wonders.

You'll have fun with it. It's been used pretty well with the checkering worn down like that. I bet it is smooth.

it is well used. Lots of dings and scratches. Given the history of the model 65, it might have been a police trade in though it doesn't have any PD markings on it. Trigger is smooth, but i think someone did a trigger job on it when they replaced the hammer and trigger. I wonder if it has an aftermarket spring kit, but not sure how to identify that.

Bought it as a project but its honestly better mechanically than i thought. Cylinder gap is a tight .006" and endplay is ~.001-.0015". I read that tolerance for gap is (.004-.008" new, .010" max) and endplay should be .000 - .002.

Haven't decided how i'm going to refinish it. I think i will work the scratches out and get it to a "brushed" stainless look, then decide if i want to polish from there.

I wouldn't do anything to it, just leave it as it is.

Opened it up today and found that the hammer block was missing. Called Cabelas and they said they would send it to their “gunsmith” and have one put in. I didn’t want to do all that so they said they’d give me a gift card worth the cost of the part. Showed them a reciept from Numrich gun parts and Cabelas is sending me a card in the mail. Pretty good service in my opinion.

Cleaned up alot of the scratches and dings too. Couldn’t leave well enough alone. I didn’t get carried away with it. Just took off the highs that would catch on cloth and such.

I have a Mod. 13, which is the same as yours, but blued. For $400 you did ok, you will enjoy that pistol, I have found that I like +P.38’s in mine, .357’s are a little hot for a 3” barrel for my taste. A good packin’ pistol.
