Shoalwater or JH Outlaw

I am in the process of finding a new boat. I was shoalwater all the way but recently JH outlaw has peeked my interest. For those that own them or have fished from them what is your opinion? I will be going with a 21' with a raised console. TIA

Court & Trouthunter, what is it about the JH that you prefer over the Shoalwater? I love my Shoalwater 21 but I'm always looking at larger boat options.

I know the quality on the JH is outstanding & I can't really talk quality on the Shoalwater because I have no experience with them-With JH you will be dealing with some of the most honest & reputable people in the business-The Sport Marine family is 1st class-You will have to search long & hard to find anyone that has anything negative to say about them-Good luck on your decision-Keep us updated please.

I went with the JH Outlaw 230x over the Shoalwater 23 and have no regrets. I’m sure some of this would carry over to the 21.

Better ride - The Outlaw handles rough water a bit better. They both ride nice, but, the Outlaw should be a bit smoother in rough water. The Outlaw is definitely a dryer ride as well. Trim tabs are optional with the JH. Pretty much mandatory on the Shoal if you want the best ride.
Handling - This one’s not even close. The Outlaw turns like it’s on rails. If these two boats went through a slalom course, the JH wins by a mile
Layout - This one’s subjective, but, the Outlaw feel more roomy with the larger back deck. I have the rear seat option and prefer the way it sits on the JH to the Shoal
Build Quality - Subjective as well, but, Sport Marine does a great job with quality control
Service - Service has been outstanding with Sport Marine. John and Lindsay are awesome people to do business with. With Shoal it will vary by dealer. Waypoint has an excellent reputation and Jarred is a solid guy.
Wash - Speed & shallow water capability are pretty much identical

I like the bow design and the gradual sweep of the sponson on the JH over the design on my Shoalwater. I pretty much only see JH in pics on this site. I suppose if I were closer to Houston I'd see more JH boats.

I'm a Waypoint fan boy though without a doubt.

I was at the boat ramp and ran into a guy with a new 18' outlaw. I told him that I just bought my 23' outlaw. He went on to tell me that I made a great choice in getting an outlaw and that he was thrilled to have his. He had sold his shoalwater and bought the outlaw. In his opinion the outlaw out performed his bigger shoalwater in just about every category. My suggestion would be to demo both before you decide. I did before making my choice. Good luck!

I am going to the boat show tomorrow. I will be climbing all over the JH outlaw and talking with John. I am going down to Shoalwater on Monday to meet Gene and his crew there. If you know anyone looking for a well taken care of 23' Majek Skiff, I have one posted in the classifieds.
