2002 F250 7.3 power steering hard to turn

I have a 2002 F250 7.3 4X4 crew cab and have problems with the power steering when at idle or at low speed. I have replaced the 3 or 4 times and it will get better but not like it used to be when new. The hydro boost has been changed and all of the lines blown out also.

Thanks

i am assuming you replaced the power steering pump 3 or 4 times. In the back of the pump there should be a high pressure by-pass (relief) valve that is transferred to the new pump. My guess is that valve is stuck partially open, causing fluid to by-pass lowering p/s pressure. Have you noticed it takes a little more brake pedal effort also?

Power steering pump

Its been bad for so long I can not remember if it takes more effort to push the brake pedal.

What fluid are you putting in the power steering pump?

Power steering

We have tried regular power steering fluid and transmission fluid with no improvement.

I still think the pressure relief valve stuck partially open is your problem. You might be able to flush it if it has some gunk in it. Truck in park, engine running, raise and hold engine speed to 2000 rpm, turn steering wheel all the way until it stops. hold it at full lock for 5 seconds, back off, repeat 5 or 6 times. This will allow fluid to flush through the valve and possibly clear it. If this is not successful, valve will need to be removed, disassembled, and cleaned or replaced.

The only fluid that should be put in that system is Dexron Mercon III ATF. Power steering fluid has a different viscosity and the additives aren't good for the seals.
