Any metal detector folks here?

My daughter likes to hunt treasure with her metal detector. Not knowing the laws, by google it appears that finding a place to hunt legally is the hardest part of this pastime. I am considering joining a group and though I would try here to see if anyone shares this hobby. Any lines on a good group in Houston to join?

It looks like City parks are OK to hunt in but not county parks, beaches appear to be another possible place to hunt legally. After doing some searching it also appears that this hobby is kind of frowned on, kind of discouraging.

Ya'll should join one of the metal detecting clubs in the area. That is the quickest way to get up to speed on where you can and can't hunt, as well as tips on improving your hunting skills. Our club (Tomball) has several group hunts a year and many of the members get together to hunt private properties we have permission on. Meetings are held once a month where members show off their finds and share information. Many of us are members of all the clubs in the area...Houston, Tomball, Montgomery County, Galveston. GREAT group of folks always happy to help newcomers to the hobby and share their knowledge!!
In the past a few disrespectful people gave the hobby a bad name in the eyes of some by trespassing, leaving holes in parks, etc... one of the main goals of these clubs is promoting a strict code of ethics so we can continue to enjoy our hobby.

Lots of good info on this site and links to all the local clubs:

I have nothing meaningful to add to this post, but the title caught my eye. I just finished watching season 1 of a British TV show called "Detectorists". If you can handle British humor at all, it is really good and funny. Highly recommended for you guys!

It showed up on Netflix for me.

Great hobby, Wayne and Doug at the website above are great guys and they have a detector shop in spring Tx. All Harris Co. parks are off limits, state parks are no go too. When I enter a park or other public land and don't see a sign prohibiting it I figure its ok, never had any problems yet. Be sure to cover all holes and take your trash diggings as well as the good stuff with you, leave the area better than you found it. Failure to do this will get you/all of us banned from these areas as has happened in many places, such as Harris Co. parks.
