Old Ambassadeur 5000....

So, my Mom's cousin passed recently. While helping prep the house for estate sale, I noticed some old rod and reels on the wall in the garage. The executor said he had no problem with me taking one. I picked out an old Ambassadeur 5000 on a True Temper Corporation rod. I've sent off some inquires about the reel, but thought I'd share here and see if anyone knows anything about it. I also just think it's cool and is going to look great on my wall....

Depending on when the reel was manufactured it was likely made in Sweden.
Tight lines!

Abu Garcia starting making reels in 1941, but the Ambassadeur model wasn't introduced until 1952. Anyone over 30 who has ever fished the Texas coast has probably owned at least 1, and for years they were the go-to reel for anyone throwing hardware along the coast. The design has remained virtually unchanged for over 60 years, and in my opinion is still the best reel ever made.
If you look on the bottom of the reel seat, called the "foot", there should be a number. Call 1-800-ABU-GARCIA, and give them the number and they should be able to tell you when it was made.
You don't have to hang it on the wall, put some fresh line on it and take it fishing.
As far as the rod goes, True Temper started making rods around 1925. At that time most rods were made from cane or bamboo. There were a few tubular steel rods at the time, but because the had a seam running the entire length of the rod, they were useless. True temper started makeing solid steel rods with the square blanks of fencing swords. Although heavy, compared to what we have now, they were state of the art back then. Somewhere around the 1950s they started making fiberglass rods, and I believe they quit making rod in the late 70s or early 80s.

I have two one is a 1954 model named Olga. The other is younger model from the 70s. I still use both of them regularly. I would be willing to bet there is not a reel.made today that can stand up to the decades of extreme use and abuse these reals can.
