Whatever you do don't take a loan on a boat. That's the dumbest thing than you can do. Good luck you can get a great boat for well under 35 cash.

Omg, can one of these threads ever just stick to the subject....Illusion, Shoalcat, Haynie, Transport, just gonna have a few years on them, but no biggie if it wasn't abused. And no, financing a boat isn't stupid, unless you do a long term loan on a boat you don't plan on keeping.

The OP originally listed New Water as one of the choices and then specifically asks about the Chiquita after all of the other models are talked about.

Just an observation.

Curious as to why you would offer such advice. I have been running Mercs since 1995, eight of them to be exact, three have been Optimax models. Several of these motors logged more than 1200 hours in service, two of them were Optimax.

Very few maintenance issues during the 25 years - no blown powerheads - no lower unit gearcase issues except one unfortunately destroyed by an obstruction in the water.

What has your experience been?

I’ve had some minor issues with mine. Overall still happy with my opti. I have friends with etecs who have had plenty of major problems. I used to run Yamahas on my work boat. Had several issues with those. Point being, I’m not sure if there really is a superior manufacturer. All have those engines that run forever and all have lemons.

If I did not hit something with my prop, I would not have the lower end issues I’m having now with my 225 Optimax.

I considered fixing the motor, selling it, and repowering with something new. But I still like my Optimax and decided to fix it and keep it. I appreciate the simplicity of a 2-stroke engine and I like that 2-strokes engines enjoy it when you hammer down and let ‘em eat.
