2003 Chevy 1500HD

I recently bought a new to me 1500 HD with 6.0 175000 miles. The fan makes a roaring noise all the time. Like when you start a cold engine the fan roars till it warms up. So I thought maybe the fan clutch was stuck. I replaced it and still does it. So does this model truck just sound like a school bus taking off in the morning or what. And also is the 1500 HD a 3/4 ton or like a heavy half? The know it alls at the shop all 3/4 ton. 8 lug axels. Thanks for any help

Can't answer about the fan other than I had a pair of 6.0s and they didn't make that sound.

The 1500HD is a 3/4 ton frame etc. I recall the GVWR is 8510. Again as I recall, the differences between the 2500hd and 1500hd is the rear axel (the 2500 is a full floater) and the sub frame behind the rear axle mounts.

Lol, it's a classic..

My '06 Duramax does that when it's cold.. Give it a few mins of driving, and it stops. Sounds like a hurricane.

My dads '03 Avalanche with the 5.3 does the same exact thing.

My moms 2014 Suburban with the 5.3 does the same exact thing.

Friends 2005 Silverado with the 6.0 does the same exact thing.

Wasted money on your fan clutch. Every GM truck I've been in does this... GM had a bulletin on it a while back. Completely normal.

When you first crank up in the morning, the fan clutch is engaged. After you drive a few mins it will disengage itself. It's just the nature of a GM. Completely normal bud

And the 1500HD is a half ton with a 3/4 ton gas motor basically. I'm pretty sure it also might have heavier leaf springs in the back. But, it is a half ton. Very cool truck you have! You don't see many 1500HD's

There was an article floating around (by an automotive source) explaining the purpose of the 1500 HD. Purportedly GM did not have a crew cab truck in the early to mid 2000's and crew cabs were becoming wildly popular (Ford was killing them with the Super Crew). The 2500 trucks had a true crew cab so they re-configured a 2500 and called it a 1500 HD and I think they made the ride a little softer and tweaked some other things. It's a 3/4 ton chassis, 3/4 ton engine/trans, etc. It's mostly marketing than mechanical. For people who wanted a 1500 crew cab.

Idea 1500 HD Info

Check out this web site on GM Heritage and you can download the info about your truck.

https://www.gmheritagecenter.com/doc...erado-1500.pdf

I have a 2006 1500HD, that I use as a shop/utility truck. It is a great workhorse and does everything I need to do.
Good luck,

Supergas

Thanks for the replies, took it to a mechanic friend of mine. He said the new fan clutch was ****. Took it back ,got a new one and it works fine no more roar after warm up. I’ve owned a few 1/2 ton trucks and suvs this has a very stiff tight ride door sticker says 8600 gvwr. Thanks y’all I’m going to do a little research. This truck is really nice one owner that I stumbled across visiting relatives. And being truckless the past couple years I snagged it.
