Beginner seeking tips

I will be in the hill country next week staying right off of the Blanco River, I have a fly combo that I've been practicing casting at the neighborhood pond and will be taking this as my main fishing method. The tips I ask for are what flies are recommended for this trip? I am not picky about the fish I would just like to hook anything on the fly. The knowledge I have about fly fishing comes from youtube and it is mostly geared towards small streamer trout, I know there are trout in the canyon trailrace but don't plan on fishing that area this trip. Another question I have is should I take the kayak along or would suffice?

During the summer, terrestrial patterns like grasshoppers work well.

Seems like woolly buggers work about everywhere for most types of freshwater fish, but I haven’t fished the Blanco specifically. I’d have some little foam spiders and a smaller foam popper or two. Get some buggy looking nymphs, maybe a small crawfish pattern or two. Bucktail streamers can work like the black nosed dace or a Mickey Finn. What weight rod do you have? You probably wouldn’t need anything bigger than a sized 6 and size 8-14 might be better for sunfish and small bass. Big, bulky flies like deer hair poppers or anything with much rabbit zonker will be tough to handle with something like a 5 weight.

Bring some extra leaders or leader making materials as you might end up giving some to the trees if you aren’t so used to fly fishing.

I don’t know about the Blanco other than a quick drive by. If it is normally pretty shallow, which I believe it is, like a lot of Hill country streams, the kayak might just be an unnecessary hassle.

Good luck
