Just out of curiosity, has there ever been an alligator attack on a wader in Texas?

^^This guy said it well^^

As for the dangers of wade fishing... Driving your truck/prius to your wade spot was the most dangerous part of the wade trip. Sure there are dangers, but that's life. That being said, I do make large purchases without talking to my wife, so from one adrenaline junkie to another. Life is short, live it!

You're on the right track though. Know the dangers, have a plan, don't sweat it, and pretend you know how to catch fish like the rest of us.

Lots of good points. Going to invest in the guards and probably a self deploy pfd. Will jellyfish penetrate waders and cotton?

I had Zeitgeist eat my lunch on a wade once, so there is that. You could lose your lunch under the wrong circumstances.

"Know the dangers, have a plan". OP is on the right track with the questions, and there's lots of good advice. Many of the dangers are overblown, and the others can be minimized with good habits.

A pair of jeans or waders will keep the jelly fish from stinging you. Someone may tell a weird story about it happening, but I've never heard of it.

The jellyfish that are really dangerous are mostly around Australia and the Indo-Pacific. The ones we have around here basically sting like fire ants or less. Unless you have some unusual allergy, you won't like it but you won't be in danger. I still wade in shorts. Last spring a tide washed in a wave of jellies, and I got stings all over my legs. It was unpleasant, but by the time I got home it was barely more than a memory. A pair of jeans would have prevented it.

sgrem has best summary in a while...cabelas makes a fanny pack life jacket you can wear in water that is a manual inflate. Unless you are knee deep wading buy one and wear it. Hopefully you never need it.
