sheepy2 Report 1

Sat this evening. Saw 6 whitetail deer. One was a small 4 point buck in velvet. No pigs or Axis seen or heard. Set 2 cameras. It is dry and hot, but not as hot as it is going to get! I may hunt tomorrow morning. We'll see!

sheepy2 Axis?

I didn't hunt this morning. I have a feeder about 50' from the front door of the trailer so we can see and watch deer. This feeder went off at 7:00 this morning. Five whitetail were under the feeder within 5 minutes. Suddenly we started seeing deer running up the hill towards the feeder. Eight Axis doe, yearling and a fawn came in and ran the whitetail off! They were there for about 10 minutes and until all the corn under the feeder was gone. Funny but I sit in a stand in the early morning and late evening and many times I don't even see one! Amazing!

sheepy2 Success, Sort Of!

Worked all day putting a roof on the cabin. Went out this evening late just before 8. Saw 2 big Axis bucks on the way to my stand. Saw 8 whitetail and 4 Axis doe. At 9:05 made out the shape of pigs under my small green feeder light. Uses my illuminated red dot scope and my trusty 22-250 and shot at the head of a dark shape under the feeder. Success! I'll sleep good tonight!

sheepy2 Today's the Day!

My last day to hunt. Going home early Wednesday morning. I sat at my other stand this morning. Got there before 5 and the feeder went off at 6:30. Whitetail were waiting for the feeder to go off! Seven whitetail were under the feeder when 9 Axis doe came in from 2 directions! They moved the whitetail out a little but they were all in or around the feeder pen. While watching them I noticed a larger Axis walking slowly out of the brush from about 50 yards behind the feeder. He had a nice big body and horn about 16"+- in length. He slowly walked into the feeder pen and ate corn all the way around the feeder. I took my 270 off of safety and put the crosshairs on his shoulder. I did this several times but just couldn't pull the trigger. After the corn was gone he ((and the rest of the deer) stepped out of the feeder pen and slowly walked off to the left behind some brush. I decide to see if I could draw them back so I spun the feeder remotely with my phone. A few whitetail wandered back first and the out of the brush the Axis buck walked back and went into the feeder pen again! He ate corn all the way around the feeder again. I again put the crosshairs on him and took the rifle off of safety. Again, I just couldn't pull the trigger! After a minute of so all of the Axis bolted (including most of the whitetail) and ran off. It wasn't 7:30 and I was done!
I guess in old age I've gotten soft-hearted. I'm not mad at them anymore and I get more satisfaction out of the hunt than the kill. I'm pig hunting tonight until 10 since they came out at my feeder at 9 last night just ahead of the rain. I'll use my 22-250 under the green feeder light or my AR with night vision. I will shoot a pig in a heartbeat!

sheepy2 Well the Old Man Did It!

I planned to go sit late at my feeder to see if the pigs that were on my game cam would come out again at 9:00. Me and Honey sat from 5:30 until after dark forty! It was warm with very little wind, Saw whitetail, armadillo and rabbits. Sun set at about 8:35 and we waited for the pigs to appear. It was a red sunset so it stayed a little light until after 9! Finally at about 9:40 I saw a dark figure moving through an opening towards the feeder. When I checked under the feeder with the binos I could make out about 6 or more pigs. I picked up my trusty 22-250, looked through the red dot scope and waited for one to go broadside and present me with a head shot. One did and I squeezed the trigger. I could make out a pig lying on its side kicking under the green light. We loaded up, closed the stand and drove to pick him up. It was a small black boar about 35 pounds. It feels good to make a plan and do what needs to be done to make it come to fruition! He's cleaned and cooling down now!
