I know this comes kind of late in posting a reply..sorry! I have caught Black Drum on the JFK Causeway (North side which is closer to Live Oak Point). I do not go out farther than say, the 3rd light and I just hook a live crab and let it drift "naturally" with no leader, weights, etc. Of course, the pier is high, so you'll need a pier net. Another place in the Copano Bay area is Holiday Beach but you need a key card to get in. If you're in the area, let me know, and I'll buzz ya in. Hope this helps.
