I've never bought a reel without taking it out of the box & making sure all of the parts work and giving it a free-spool spin or two.

Return/exchange it. Don't accept them adjusting it. If you haven't used it yet, there should be no problem with an exchange. When they give you the new one, take it out of the box in front of the sales person and give it a once over
