I wouldn't refer to it as leaving, unless you're talking about getting out of casting range of a human standing in the surf. Maybe it's shift.

They'll move out deeper and, in the case of surf near jetties, they move to the jetties, following the bait, and where there is deeper water to hide from the cold of winter 30 feet from the rocks. If you can find time and good conditions during the winter, just go have a try at the Surfside Jetty
