We have started the New Year off with a deep freeze and it has definitely limited your fishing spots to certain areas. Canals, deep guts and holes are probably your best bet for now until that water temperatures creep up a little more.AWESOME REDFISH!
As warmer days occur expect the fish to venture out as the sun warms up the flats in the afternoons. Concentrate your efforts wherever the blackest nastiest mud is located. On days when the water is sucked out those deeper bays that were once 4 to 6 feet deep are now shallow flats to drift as the sun warms them up. Constantly look at your water temperature gauge as you drive around to different spots. No doubt the fish will be in the warmest areas. Any small bayou or feeder creeks bringing fresh water in will typically be warmer and these places are redfish magnets so never overlook fishing a feeder creek especially if the entrance has thick nasty mud in its opening. COLD WEATHER BOX
This is definitely the time of year when artificials will outproduce live bait. Slow metabolisms will create slow methodical fish and that is how you have to work the lure you are presenting. Slow and on the bottom will produce lethargic strikes from cold fish that are still very hungry. Gulps are a favorite lure of mine for colder conditions especially if redfish are in the area but really soft plastics like Big Nasty and Bass Assassins in darker colors tend to do very well also. GREAT PIC
If colder conditions persist this entire winter expect this pattern to hold for awhile. I know there are a lot of anglers out there that say it is too cold to fish or the fish won't bite in this weather and in both occasions they are wrong. Fishing this time of year is all about being prepared and dressing properly. Hats, gloves, face masks and layers will keep you warm toasty and comfortable when on the boat during the colder season. And yes the fish do bite this time of year and sometimes better than you would expect. SLAUGHTER
So get out there now because it is actually darn good fishing right now. Don't forget to take a kid fishing!!
