I am redoing a UglyStik surf rod that I have and want to re-paint it. The way I am planning on going about his is to buff down with steel wool (wich I have already done) then painting it, rebuffing then coat the whole rod in low build flexcoat or u40. What do you guys think?

I sent Ken Preston an email asking this question as well. He said that it will work just fine. I am gonna use thje low build formula finish for this.

Iv'e repainted blanks a few times and i always mixed the paint with the flex coat .. Looks like a factory job when I finished. I would mix a small amount first to make sure the paint and the glass coat were compatable and coat a piece of a rod. Then the next day inspect it and go from there.
Good Luck and Screamin Drags R.R....

P.S. Just enough paint to make the flex coat the color you want about 90/10

Yeah I was gonna do it that way to until Skipjack told me of another way. He uses Minwax Polycrylic. I am in the process of doing one as we speak and will let everyone know how it turns out. Skip swears by it. He says he has done it the way you are talking about and after a while it cracked on him. He says the polycrylic has not cracked yet. Thanks for the info.
