I was thinking about this re the other thread about kicker motors, etc.
On Star: "This is on star"
Capt: " Ive got a problem"
On Star: "Yes Capt , we have you 78 miles offshore from Freeport, Texas at Lat.....Lon...., near a rig called Tequila. Is that right? How can we help you?"
Capt: Yes that is my location. I've lost power and am being towed by a buddy. It will probably take 10 hours to get back, could you please call our homes and let them know we're alright and what has happened. We have, lights, plenty of fuel, water and food, but we will be in Freeport well after dark.
On Star: You bet capt and we'll keep checking on your progress, let us know if there is any problem on the tow. or if you need assistance from Towboats or the Coast Guard

What is the cost? Where? Details! I am interested. Radio seems like a stone age solution to a serious issue 100+ miles out. You really are alone out there.

the cost is around 500 for the phone and i pay 39 a month for 30 minutes i hardly use. i use it to call and get sea forecasts and to let land locked friends know how we are doing offshore. however it is ready to call the coast guard should we have an emergency. it is also nice if you decide to change your float plan while offshore...rick

Its already available

Genstar has such a system available on all their new boats...It even monitors your bilge pumps and battery voltage. Its a system managed by Volvo. Works just like On-star...the only catch is that its not available as an add on for an existing boat.

I dont want that much communication capacity. I do want a marine specialist on star person at the other end to assist with problems, just like they do for cars on the radio ads Ive heard. And, I only want to pay about 10 bucks a month for it. Also, Ive heard that two on star owners can have a two way communication with each other...like a sat phone.
