HOUMA - Conservation groups will go to work improving two artificial reefs meant to spur oyster growth and create inviting habitat for fish in waters off Terrebonne Friday.

The construction will take place at Bird Island artificial reef and Point Mast artificial reef.
Bird Island Artificial Reef near Isle Derniere was constructed in 2002 by Coastal Conservation Association of Louisiana. Point Mast Artificial Reef near Wine Island was constructed by Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries in 1985.
Construction crews will be laying 3,500 tons of limestone barged in from Kentucky on each of these sites.
The project is being coordinated by the Coastal Conservation Association of Louisiana, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
