Winter flounder action heating up

January and February are traditionally a slow time of year for flounder fishing and gigging. The best flounder gigging of the year usually runs from mid-February to October, when the spawning fish return to feed in the shallow back bays and lakes. However, during a warm spell with light winds, the winter months can also be very productive for the remaining flounder that stay in the bay all winter.

I had the Craig B. group of 4 onboard tonight. Conditions were great, with dead calm winds, high tides, and dense fog. Usually this time of year is slow for gigging, but things can get good under the right combination of conditions (like tonight). Water clarity was poor in most areas, but the fish holding shallow over hard sand bottom were easy targets. We ended with 19 flounder plus 4 sheepshead by 10:30pm, in socked-in dense fog. The fish tonight were good size and fat for this time of year, ranging from 14-19".

Bigger flounder tonight

1/8/2016
I had the Craig B. group of 4 onboard again tonight. Conditions were perfect, with dead calm winds, slightly high tide, and warm temps with fog. After a long boat ride out, we got on the fish right away. We found the fish in bunches over hard sand bottom with tons of active finger mullet in the area. We ended with a 20 flounder limit plus 3 black drum and 3 sheepshead by 8pm. The flounder tonight were larger, in the 15-20" range. The drum were 24-28", and we had one sheepshead that weighed 12 pounds.

Ducks after the front

1/9 and 1/10/2016
I had the Craig B. group for duck hunting the last 2 days. Hunting was good, just not much variety. We saw 9 different species during our hunts, but many birds were decoy shy. Redheads, pintail, shoveler, greater scaup, and goldeneye rounded out our 1/2 limit bags over the last 2 days.

Only 2 more weeks of duck season remaining, come get some before its over....
