I know better than to use the word " Old " when talking about my wife!

I call my wife all sorts of things. She does the same to me. I'm sure I've dropped the old lady line once or twice. She is almost 6 years my senior. We have a good time with each other. We work together, so we're always ragging on each other in some form or fashion. To each their own. Neither of us sweat the small stuff...

As some may know my wife is Filipino.
Around the house I some times use the term Asawa which is "wife" in Tagalog.
She calls me Tikadong (tick a dong) which is a Visayan term for a young man.
Some times it is shortened to just Dong. I have received some sly glances from older ladies at the mall when the asawa calls out, "Dong, come look at this."

BTW....I think the old lady or old man term is disrespectful.

With friends only, she knows and she doesn't care! ... she wouldn't like me to call her that in public, I wouldn't either ..
IMO it means no disrespect , you can only have one Real ol' man or ol' lady
Pretty common where i'm from.

I picked it up working construction when I was younger. Not meant as a sign of disrespect, but as a term of endearment. I don't call her old lady as in "Hey, old lady, make me a sammich" Most of the time its baby or her name. I call my Dad my old man. He never had a problem with it until a couple years ago. I'm only 33 so if I was old, like 50 or something I probably wouldn't use it as she would not receive it the same. J/K guys. Your only as young as you feel.
Oh yeah. It surprises me how this can offend other people it really has nothing to do with, so much. If husband and wife are OK with it why is it your business. If it is meant to be disrespectful and demeaning, by all means step in, be a gentleman and help the little lady. Everybody lives to their own standards. If it doesn't hurt you personally, well, it's like I tell my kids " nobodies perfect and you need to worry about yourself, before getting into somebody else's business" That's my Monday rant and my .01, I think that's all it's worth today.

Some of you guys really crack me up about all this disrespect talk. For one thing the expression is not "old lady" its "ole lady". Just like your dog is called "ole Blue" or your truck is ole Betsy or what not. I guess me and my ole lady just don't care what we call each other as long as we don't call each other late for supper. In my opinion it is not disrespectful to call each other ole whatever, it's just an expression.

When addressing him its always Babe, Baby, Hon, Sweetheart or Timbo. When I call his name, he wants to know what I'm upset about. When speaking of him to others I always call him hubby. The ONLY time I refer to him as ol' man is in jest and usually when I am repeating something he has said and the person wants to argue .... then I'll say something like "I'm just the messenger, take it up with the ol man!"

Growing up, I was taught ol' man (or my man) and ol' lady was what you called the person you lived with that you weren't married to so being called that when you were married was an insult to your husband or wife. (Either showing my age or my sheltered upbringing. lol)

Daddy will sometimes say "You'll have to go ask the old woman the answer to that." To which mom replies "OLD!!??!!" lol

Started by biker gangs years ago before the women were refered to a *****es. Guyes might not mean it to be disrespectful but there is no respect at all in that term. How about girlfriend or wife.

I don't see a problem with it whatsoever. It's just a joke/saying. Like someone else said its usually pronounced Ole lady. I've mostly heard Mexicans using it but I'm white and have joked about it many times with my girlfriend. She could care less. I'm not literally introducing her to strangers as "hi, this is my old lady." Its usually around friends drinking beers. "Hey, tell your ole lady to hurry up".

I don't think it is trashy or disrespectful. It's just a term some people choose to use and when it is used I don't think anyone actually uses it in a disrespectful manner. Some people are more sensitive than others I guess? I don't really sweat the small stuff. It wouldn't bother me not one bit......
