Im going deep sea fishing for the first time on tuesday on the Capt. John, and was just wondering what would be a good thing to take before the trip.
The Capt. John is a very light boat in the bow. One of the deckhands told us he'd been working party boats for 18 years and never been seasick, and the first week that they had the Capt. John he got seasick twice. I went on the very first trip on that boat and they had to turn around and refund everyone's money. That said, I've been out on it since then and it rode well. There are always a few people who get seasick, even in a flat calm but it's been awful calm lately and if you take dramamine the night before and then again in the mornning then there's no way you should get seasick on that boat.

Remedy

I've always been susceptible to getting seasick. I had the measles as a young child and it effected my inner ear. This has never failed me in some mighty big waves as a customer and as a deck hand. Take 1, and only 1, original formula dramamine 1.5-2 hours before the trip. Eat breakfast. The medicine will kick in by then. After that I can do whatever I want, including going below deck to work. I've tried the night before technique and it always put me to sleep after I took the morning pill. KISS. Keep It Simple Stupid.

seasickness

I have tried several different things but an old seafarers prescription always works. Pickles, the vinagar and pickles settles your stomach immediately. I have seen people too sick to stand up eat a slice or two of a dill pickle get over it and fish the rest of the day !

lordbater is right the most important thing is a good nights sleep. Add to that drink plenty of water the day before. Fatigue and dehydration are your worst enemies to becoming sick. I take Dramamine original early 6pm the night before so I can sleep well. I wake up just fine taking it that early. If you take it at 11pm and fall asleep around midnight and wake up at 5am you feel drugged.

Sea Sick Medication

There are a few different medications that you can take for Sea Sickness. As stated earlier Dramamine will work but tends to make individuals drowsy. Also Dramamine can make your mouth become very dry, but will do the trick if you drink plenty of fluids (water). On the other hand, I have worked offshore as a paramedic and Meclizine (Meclizine Hydrochloride HCL) seems to be the trick. You still take it the same way you take Dramamine, but it will not make you drowsy. Just my thoughts. Jason

Ginger!!!

I have never got sea sick, though once in 20 - 30' sea's when I was on a 400 foot ship in the Coast Guard, I did not feel real good. But I have taken many of people out before that got sick and they have tried everything. Then a few weeks back, I took a group out that had crystalized Ginger that they took with mints. Said they use to get sea sick all the time, but when the started taking this, they never even got nauseous. They went on to tell me that it has worked for everybody they know that has gotten sea sick before. You might try it. You can get the crystalize Ginger at some groceries stores and all whole foods stores!!!
