freediving

You should practice freediving first and build lots of confidence. Try weight retrieval (10-20lbs) at real freediving depths (20-30ft to start). Then extend your time on bottom as you can. Maybe sit on bottom and remove and replace your mask. Freediving and freediving while shooting fish are 2 different ballgames. When you get ready to try it at the rigs, I recommend using a pole spear first if you have one. If not, shoot the smallest legal fish first for practice and shorten your cable for less risk of the fish going under a brace while you are on your way up. You mostly see this activity done in open-water. The rigs can add peace of mind because of the referrence points that the structure provides, but can complicate things if you can't make a direct ascent to the surface. Have fun and good luck.

I only freedive to shoot fish, and learned this activity from some of the best; very experienced and knowledgeable divers that can dive well below 100'. You should practice alot in the pool first as well as read multiple books on the subject. Look up apnea on the internet...... Also, BlueWater Hunting and Freediving by Terry Maas is an excellent read.

The best freediving months in Texas are april-jun, the thermocline is much higher as well as the fish. Late July to Sep, you will have to dive well below 60' just to get a look, and no room for error. Rig diving is the way to go, you can ambush fish around the rigs, also generally no sharks (generally).

Freediving has got to be one of the most challenging and rewarding experiences life has to offer. I hate to say, but compared to tank divers (spearfishermen) it is 1,000 times better if you can train your body to do it.

Any questions shoot me a pm.....

Hi Toby,

How is everything?
Do you have any plans to go out this summer?

WE catched some Mangos and a Ling with Bill last Sunday.
The water is great but the pass in matagorda is really bad, 2 feet waters.

Cheers

Ivan
