after two days of four of us fishing the surf last weekend joey, who's stringer doubled the rest of ours added together in numbers and size both days, told us his secret. the dinks were up in the water column and the keepers were tight on the bottom(even had red marks from rubbing the bottom). he would cast, let it sink and drag the bottom. the first day we were about to leave because between the other 3 of us we had 1 keeper. when we pulled up to joey, he waved us off and held up a stringer of 7 nice keepers. unfortunately, he forget to tell us about the dragging the bottom thin until late the next day. i guess the bigger ones were being lazy and sitting on the bottom waiting for leftovers from the smaller fish hunting above them.
