The wife and I are off next week, and are making a swing through West Texas. We have no schedule, just a rough plan. We're starting near Lubbock, and heading west on 82 to Carlsbad, NM, Then South to the Guadalupe mountains. Next is Davis Mtns, Balmorhea, and Monahans. We expect to end up in Big Bend after a few days, might even cross over at Presidio and stroll through the mercado and have lunch or dinner.

This will be my first time west of Monahans in Texas, and would like a little help from you guys who have been there. Are there any restaurants out there that are very good? All my tourist info centers around beautiful landscapes and historical sites, but I expect to get hungry at some point during my nine days off. I'd sure hate to miss the best groceries in West Texas by wandering around blind.

Thanks Guys,

Lance.

Sorry RR, it's gone.

It's the Triple JJJ Chop House now, but the beer's about the same, and the food's excellent.

I live about 40 miles east of Lubbock, so I'll be singing an old Mac Davis song 'til I get to Brownfield or Seminole. I won't even be slowing down in Lubbock.

Lance, eat at the Limpia Hotel in Ft. Davis and the Gage Hotel in Marathon. The Gage is fine dining, expensive but worth it. The Limpia is excellent also, actually the restaurant in next door but I got a chicken fried tenderloin there, homeade rolls, homeade pies, good stuff. You can book rooms in both places. I stayed in some lodge in Ft. Davis that is made out of native stucco and all the furniture is built from locae pine. Workers built it all way back in the government building program, I forget what it was called.

plan to be around Alpine/Marfa one night and go see the Marfa Lights. they're best viewed in winter when the air is cold and clear, but you should enjoy them. the Trans/Pecos is one of my favorite parts of TX. I need to get out there soon too. BTW, it's been extremely wet lately and I've heard it's really pretty.

When you get down towards Big Bend there is a little town called Marathon. There is a old hotel there name The Gage. They have a great restraraunt. Cool place you might want to stay there.

Pack enough provisions to get you across New Mexico, cause this place is a culinary wasteland. I have been working in Artesia since May, and the Whataburgers in Texas have more flavor to them than the food we have tried around here. Oh, never order chili in NM.

RR, yes they still have the vats of artsy-fartsy beer. Chocolate beer and some kind of red **** for rabid fans of the West Texas Dirt College. (TTU)
They have stuff so thick it looks like 90wt oil when they poor it. I like light beers, not stuff you have to chew before you can swallow it. The food there is very good, though.

Come on, Amazon. New Mexico isn't ALL that bad, but you could be right about Artesia. Some people there do have some funny ideas about food.

Thanks, guys. Any more?

Lance.
