Hit it this morning with 1-2-fish hoping to find our first surf trout of the year. We got in the water at 5:40 and threw tops for the first hour or so. We had a few trout each, but nothing big, just 18-20"ers. They weren't blowing it up, just rolling on it or slurping it. I switched to plastics and caught a couple more. It got slow so I went to the old stand by the 51m, and that is what they wanted. At one point I went 5 for 5 the smallest was 20" and the biggest 25", I thought 1-2fish was going to drown me(he was not catching fish at this time), I would cast out, twitch it a couple of times and say "there she is", by the last fish he was like"you gotta be f###### be kidding me!!" LOL. I probably caught 8-9 keepers on the mirrolure and lost two good fish, then something slammed it and snapped the knot where the flouro meets the Power Pro(a topic I have questions about) after that we couldn't get them to eat Catch 2000's or plastics. So we called it at about 10am. with a couple of full stringers. Great morning on the water, and man those surf trout have some shoulders on 'em, pull like crazy, and come flying out of the water, fun to watch.

Fishing was best for us from 8:30-10, there were two other guys near us catching quite a few as well, plastics and tops. Water was green but sandy, alot of shrimp, not many mullet until later in the morning. Sargasm weeds weren't to bad.

Good report. I've been in 1-2-fishes shoes before and dang it sux. I could throw right where they were catching and still not get a hit.

Congrats on some nice fish.....wish you had some pics though.

Thanks, I wish also. I don't take my digital with me when we wade in. Just one more thing for them to steal if the car gets broken into. I donated my fish to his parents, his dad doesn't get out as much as he use to and they love trout, so I don't have them here to take a picture of, I'm not big on a cooler shot anyways, so much nicer fresh out of the water. I guess I need a cheapie digital, that I won't cry about if I lose it.

Good going deke,
I'm glad it paid off for you. I fished about an 30 minutes this morning and caught two trout and a mack, then I had to make a round trip to San Antonio and drop off Miss Bella.

BTW I never saw so many shrimp popping and jumping in the surf as I did this morning.

Just finished cleaning

all of our trout. Every belly was full of shrimp you guys. Odd thing is that they were all huge shrimp. About the size of your index finger. One trout had a small blue fish in it's gut. I'm very shocked those fish were continuing to eat with such full bellies.

It was a signature day in the surf without a doubt.

I saw something just like this early Saturday at the base of the surfside jetty. A boat with three guys in it went around the jetty and down to the base where they proceeded to work up toward the pass, very slowly, fishing in what looked like casting distance of the waders dotting the horizon. It was so outrageous I dang near took a picture of it.

"Good going deke,

"BTW I never saw so many shrimp popping and jumping in the surf as I did this morning."

Thanks Kenny. I thought today when I tied the 51 on that you would of been proud of me. LOL
And man you aren't kidding about the shrimp. We watched seagulls hover over the water, they would scare the shrimp and the they would jump out of the water and the gulls would pick them out of the air! It was really cool to see. Some of our best fish came when a pod, herd, school, sh## load, of shrimp( I'm not sure what you call it) came by in the gut, you could see them there were so many. Wish I had a cast net, I would still be cleaning shrimp.

"I will never understand how different the fishing can be from one day to the next with almost identical weather"
Man do I know how that goes. The surf has had my number the last two summers, always "you should have been here yesterday" ect. I felt today was a **** shoot since Friday people that called me said they did real well, and people I talked to Sat. only had a handfull per person, had to work for them. So I figured it could go either way, third day jinx(a theory me and my buddies have about the surf), or they are going to feed it up again like Friday. This time the fish gods smiled upon me.

"Is a Crock...tie that lure straight on the braid with a Palomar.....

Keep it simple."

Yeah, yeah, how was Baffin? Give me a call.

Color? Thats a secret. Naw, I don't mind telling you It was an ugly color that has now made me a believer. I wanted a natural color, but all my mirrolures(that weren't rusted to hell) are Chart/gold/chart, or old school red/gold/yellow, and I wanted something more natural since I thought the water was going to be clearer. I only had one that was close(I don't have a tackle store at my house like Jabx, lol). Green back, gold side, white belly(Mirrolure's site calls it a 51mr22). It looked great in the water, and obviously the trout loved it. I'm heading to Academy this week to get a couple more.

Also I forgot to mention, one of the bigger trout spit out an angel fish when I landed her. It was about 4"x4" white and black striped. It was still alive and after I picked it up and showed Gary I let it go. I have never seen that before, has anyone ever seen one in a trout when you cleaned it?

Great trip. I was out there Sunday morning as well, however with the exact opposite results. I too wonder how it can be feast or famine like it was. I had 1 undersized trout, a ladyfish, and a couple of Spanish macs to show for my efforts. Word must have gotten out that the surf was happening because where I was, Pirates near the state park, it was elbow to elbow fishermen.

Spent about the first hour or so working over the second gut, then myself and partner blazed a trail out to the third bar. It wasn't long until others made the short swim out there as well. At one point, Pirates was elbow to elbow 2 deep, some on the third with others behind them on the second. We'll for us anyway, the 3rd bar was no better than the 2nd. Did not see much being caught by anyone around us.

My partner hooked something big while out there on the 3rd. He fought it for 20 minutes before his line broke at the knot tied to his leader. Not sure what it was as we only got a short glimpse of it twice, but it sure did resemble a big ling from what I could see. Whatever it was it hammered a 3/4 oz silver spoon with a red feather trailer.

Well I am still glad we went- as I would be kicking myself for at least not giving it try with the conditions as good as they are currently.
