Looks like a front is coming in this weekend for the South Zone opener. Sure gonna play havoc with the dove hunting. Might make things interesting for the bow hunters, though.

Shouldn't the cool front push more birds into the south zone? I don't see what the problem is. Looks like a bonus to me.

Hard to tell

Fronts cause wierd things to happen. It is hard to accurately predict what will happen. Hopefully nothing as we have fields scouted that are absolutely red hot and ripe for the picking!

As long as it doesn't blow them out of there or gulley wash the whole area, it should be on like the proverbial donkey kong.

South Texas: The South Zone dove season opens Sept. 24 and prospects are good around watering holes. Fashing, George West, Three Rivers and surrounding areas are holding birds in corn, milo and wild sunflower fields. Fields around Laredo, Harlingen, Port Mansfield and Freer are holding whitewings and mourners. The forecasted cool front should deposit new birds to the area. Prospects are good.

Dunc, it's been my experience that the local or "native" birds get blown out and the ones from further north just push on thru. It may be different in other areas, but that is what I've seen around here. Maybe we could put up a STOP HERE AND EAT sign. LOL

Well, you could mow a milo field--that'll get them to stop. But the warden might not like it!

Cool fronts generally blow native birds out and move new birds in. However, the catch is in the timing. My experience has been, they don't come and go at exactly the same time. It usually takes a day or so for the native birds to leave. Then the migratory birds generally lag behind a couple or 3 days. Then it takes them a while to settle into a pattern.

I guess it's all gonna depend where Opening Weekend falls in the timing of it

My friends that hunt near Pablo slaughtered the birds last year in the rain, not sure if it was a cold front or not. Needless to say i think they had to spend as much time cleaning guns as they did their birds!

We slaughtered them in the rain last year too. But, they checked out soon after that. It's all in the timing.

I wouldn't be surprised to see the opening date earlier next year. Esp. with the explosion of whitewings. They realy are a nuisance to the ag business. But a boon to my grill!

Dog, the Feds must ultimately stamp approval on zone changes, bag limits, season dates, et al regarding migratory birds.

I'm glad you are all optimist for the opener in s tx, but from my info many of the birds moved out 2-3 weeks ago. Fronts will move the birds and we need a good one. Oh yes, don't run if it rains, because the you might have a heck of a shoot.

Dunc, don't get that young pup too close to those blazing guns, just yet.

I know that Anahuac is full of birds. Well at least the field we hunt. Friend went on Tuesday and said from 8-8:30 he could have had near a limit.



Hope this cool front holds off a day or two.

Rain or shine...

...I'm in Dilley Friday afternoon. Rain just means you have to park on the county road and walk in. 'Sides that, it makes it faster to rinch off the birds once you got 'em breasted.

There's a TPW public hunting spot just west of Dilley that has paid off in spades for mourning doves over opening weekend the past couple of years. It's also on a flight path back to town for the WWs in late afternoon. I'll be passing thru San Antonio heading that way about noon if anybody wants to tag along. Just me and the dog right now. The spot shouldn't be too busy. Last year I doubt if there were 8 guns on the sunflower field opening day and it could easily handle 4 times that number. It's been as good as any $50/day lease I've ever shot on. Well, maybe not ANY; but a 15 minute/12 bird limit hunt over sesame seeds south of Uvalde is hardly worth the drive any more. Wherever you go, don't forget to take your hulls and feathers with you when you leave. Probably gonna be a good day for snake guards, too.

Well I hope your right, I turned down a duck hunting trip this weekend and we are supposed to dove hunt Tuesday or Wednesday next week. Maybe both:doowapsta

BP, no worries, pup is staying home. I don't want her getting her first intro to gunfire at a dove shoot. So far though she seems very good about noise sensitivity. I think our shrieking daughter has helped in that regard.
