Can't remember the rulel of thumb for this as to a better ride vs bad ride any help will be appreciated.

the shorter the height and higher the seconds between provide a better ride ...


I would rather have 5'ers at 50 seconds than 3'ers at 3 seconds!!!!

If the period is at least twice the height, the ride should be acceptable. For example, 3' seas on a 6 sec or longer period are OK but 3' seas on a 5 sec period is going to be really choppy.

In the gulf, if it is double as described above great, but usually not that way. If it is 2 seconds more than height number, you will get an ok day. Also wave direction is important.

In addition to the good advice already given, look at wave steepness too. Anything more than "average" and you can expect a rough ride. Wind is the primary indicator to me though. Anything much over 10kts and it is going to be steep and choppy.
