Any idea what may cause this?

When I light the pilot it stays lit as long as I keep the pilot button pushed but after holding it down for over a minute per the instrustions and then releasing the button it goes out... Anyone have this problem?
House was bought in Dec 2002 and this is the original water heater.

Could it be the thermocouple already?

Thanks in advance for any feedback!

Respectfully,

yeah the therocouple is there so that if the pilot goes out it doesn't keep spewing gas. THat being said, it took about 3-5 minutes for my thermocouple to fully heat so it would stay on.

Make sure the flame is touching the thermocouple 1st.
