A wet-suits ability to keep you warm relies on the amount of heat your body is producing, thus they keep surfers and divers warm, but a wade fishermen is usually exerting far less energy and producing less body heat. If you use a wetsuit wade fishing plan on wading at a jogging pace or you probly wont stay warm.

waders if going after trout, slot reds. Breatahble waders or a light 2.5mm Neoprene waders.

If you are surf casting for larger predators, then a wet suit. Wet suits used for surf casting differ from thoose used by divers and surfers. Most important, zippers are in the front. Very easy access. The ones I use when surf fishing are 2/3mm and 1mm farmer john suits. Also you can get away with a shorty suit when surf casting also. No need to jog, or anything else. 1-2mm wet suits are more then enough for Texas waters.

JR,

Where can you get the farmer johns you described?

I used my old ones from REI to kayak and wade in the fall and spring, but since I'm getting a little older, they seem to have shrunk a little.

I get mine from NRS. They specialize in kayaking gear. They also have Grizzly sizes for us manly men.

I mostly use there HydroSkin farmer john wet suit. It is one of the better wet suits that I have found for the price. I wear wading pants and wading jacket over them. They fit and move better then any waders made.

Here is a link to there Hydroskin

I also have a pair of there 2.5mm farmer johns, for the price there are the best bang for the buck

95% of the time the Hydroskin is enough. Most of the time if the conditions are bad enough for me to need more, I stay home. But I must stress that most people's ideal of how to use a wet suit for fishing is way off. I layer over my wetsuits, with wading gear. The suit is only there for warmth when I am in the water. It is kinda like wet wading in the winter. When I am in the kayak, if I do not get in the water, the wet suit will keep you a 100% dry.

I also use NRS footwear. They make some of the best wet footwear I have found. I am using the workboots now, but plan on getting a pair of the Abyss soon.

This may sound like a NRS commercial, but it is not. They just make great gear for the price.
