You can do it if you buy one that is made out of aluminim . That one is steel. You would be better off using PVC and ss hose clamps

I've seen guys build them for the hitch receivers. I don't like them because if you do perhaps get something flying in the air down the freeway like a bag or something else it's likely to snap a rod in a heartbeat. Reel covers are highly advised unless you want them sandblasted like saltydog said. How large is the bed in your truck? If you've got a 8' bed just mount a regular style wall-type rod holder on the bed.

I put a two on my hauler. I bolted a couple of 1 1/2" galvanized steel flanges to the hauler and screwed in 1 1/2" male PVC couplings, then doped on two pieces of 14" long 1 1/2"PVC pipe.
I dont use them for transport. I use them as rod holders when im surf fishing.
Its two less holes I have to dig for the other rod holders and alot easier to move as the tide changes.

if you're transporting them for a real short distance don't worry about it. Long distance you can easily put the rods on top of the vehicle.
