Made our first trip out to Hoover this weekend, 2 man crew, seas were nice and flat Fri-Saturday. Sonar went out so we were fishing blind the whole time.

We didn’t really know how to start without marking fish, so once the sun went down we made drifts jigging from 400’ to surface before we found the Blackfin. Ended up boxing 6 (all 5-10 lb footballs). We threw poppers and swim baits but never saw any surface action and then the blackfin bite totally turned off when a pod of what looked like pilot whales showed up.

Switched gears Saturday morning and made another first go, but this time for swords. Ended up 1/1 on a juvenile sword on the first drift (40” lower jaw fork to tail fork). That fish put on a show, 3 big jumps and an immense amount of power. That bill was no joke, hold on with 2 hands lol. In all the chaos and only 2 guys we sadly didn’t get any pics.

S/O to checkin bottom outfitters, great quality rod / tackle.
