In a boat without outriggers, would it make sense to run birds in front of all 4 baits...or just the long lines? It seems like the birds get hit the most so why not put a hook in them and run them on all your baits?

Not a big troller but was wondering what a good basic set up would be running 4 lines and possibly a deep diver plug short?

Birds

I also run a bird way back down the center. I have used several different sizes depending on what I am targeting. I rerig with wire as I have lost too many birds due wahoo, large kings, or barracuda cutting them off.

We run the bird long way out in center, low not on a rigger.
what he said. I like to rig a small bubble jet behind the bird rigged on wire about 2' behind the bird. WFB in the middle low.

I have it low down the middle, way out and rigged with wire also. I have put some small birds at the head of a 5 lure chain before also mixed into the spread.

The important thing is to keep the bird in clean water, out of the prop wash.

Try running a pair of plugs off the corners and the birds just above the plugs. It looks like bonita or small tuna pushing the fliers to the surface. I have had all 4 lines go down on the same pass. It is hard for tuna and dolphin to pass up!
