Tow Insurance - Sea Tow vs Boat US

I currently have Boat US Insurance and the renewal is approaching fast. I used them once last year and it took the guy about 4 hours to get to me in West Bay from Freeport. I am thankful, but looking at alternatives.

I keep my boat in a sling at my house on the far west end near Sea Isle. I see the Sea Tow boat at West End Marina every time I go there to get gas, beer, bait, ice, etc.

100% of my boating/fishing is in West Bay (near Sea Isle/SLP/Carancahua). I'm wondering about switching from Boat US to Sea Tow, since the guy is literally right next to me in Sea Isle.

Anyone out here have experience with both?

My only experience with them... My buddy and I ran aground at Mud Cut when we were like 15-16 years old (younger and dumber). I mean high and dry. Long story short, TowboatUS told us to kick rocks. Seatow said they weren't able to make it out there but they checked in every 15 mins or so to make sure all was good and that we were finding a solution.

Based off that alone, I'd go Sea Tow

If you fish the Sabine area, it doesn't matter. There are no providers...zero...nada.

The one time I've needed a tow, Boat US finally found an independent guy who towed me. I had to pay him directly, then Boat US reimbursed me.

If you boat down there, make sure you have your credit card with you.

BTW, the USCG wouldn't answer my radio calls.

I have Progressive Insurance. They have a rider on their plan called Sign and Glide. It is dirt cheap to add it. They basically contract with local services. I used them last year in POC on Memorial Day. It took 30 minutes to have the tow service contact me. The Sea Tow boat was on site in an hour and 1/2. He towed me to Froggies and put me right on the dock as smooth as butter. I was very happy.

SSST, It worked just like it was supposed to. NO BILL to pay. They hauled me in from Grass Island. The one stipulation is that the boat most be floating on high tide. They will not pull you out of your own stupidity. LOL.

Being my first time ever using a tow policy, I was not sure how it worked. Very satisfied. It also covers the boat on the trailer on the roadside. You do have to register the boat with Sign and Glide. TX number and a couple of pictures. EASY. Again money and time well spent.

It depends on the operator whether Sea Tow or Boat US........Where is the tow company located relative to where you fish is one of the main considerations, another consideration is how many boats does the tow company operate. Some companies have only one or two boats, some have several, bay boats, air boats and offshore boats. How many boat captains does the company have is yet another consideration. Asking boaters which company they prefer is only a first step in the process of choosing which insurance to buy, look at the company and make an informed decision.

I had sign and glide along with Boat US in Port Isabel but I am cancelling my Progressive policy so now will only have Boat US. I never used either but was told that as a Sea Tow or Boat US member you get priority over other services in the instance they don't have a boat available. Sea Tow isn't around Port Mansfield and south so Boat US was only option, I'm in Port A now so going to look at both. I recommend coverage either way.

When I had to use SeaTow, I called them and they picked up on the 2nd ring. I gave them my GPS coordinates from my Garmin. Dispatch said they’d be there in 45 minutes and Captain would call when enroute. Everything went smoothly. Plus an interesting encounter.

I was PP’ed tight against the bank in ~12” of chocolate water in the ICW, with motor tilted up, and staying out of traffic. Then a potlicker comes and anchors near me against the bank and drops lines. Must have thought I was on ‘em. I smiled and waved, with no lines in the water, and chillin. Maybe they just wanted some company. They left before SeaTow arrived.

Go with Sea Tow. I've had them for years. Pulled my boat of a sandbar in SLP. Multiple trailer problems. In fact they've replaced three tires and one hub when the bearing went out. Sometimes it takes a while but at least they call you frequently to update you. That time it was about 11pm and they ended up sending two services hustling to ensure I was taken care of.
