Tombstones at Port Mansfield

Co-Worker was down at PM this past weekend, looking at property, and stumbled upon a rather strange site. He said that along the shoreline, between the Port channel and the South subdivision, there were all these tombstones piled up along the shore as erosion protection; usually this is done with granite or old concrete.

He said some of the inscripitions on these stones dated back to the 1800's.

Just wondering if anyone knows the story behind this. DJ

Port masfield is built on top of an old cemetary. Since it is Gov property they did not have to exume the bodies. They just removed the tombstones and built over the top of the graves. They had all of these tombstones leftover and decided to put them to use as an errosion control barrier. Pretty cool huh? Too bad I really have no clue where they came from.
Never Realized that, Thanks Argo

I always thought PM was part of the King Ranch. Anyway, that's kind of disturbing and interesting at the same time.

Argo was yanking your chain about Port Mansfield being the next Poltergiest site.

As for how the headstones got there, I'd check with the county.

As far as I know it actually is Govt property and gets leased out to the ppl that own the houses on the land. Tombstones, dont know but I liked the story.
I had dinner with the Port Director of Port Mansfield on Saturday. I sent him your message - let's see how he responds.
That sounds spooky.

You gotta figure if the tombstones are there, there's old bones somewhere. I wouldn't want to be the person stumbling on to a skeleton!
Yeah, Me and Scooby Doo want answers.

What history I have read about this area, there was never a settlement here prior to PM, so these stones must be from somewhere else.

Maybe they're from an old monument co. that went out-of-business and it was inventory never paid for or picked up.
