Channel 2 just did a fly-over of Tiki. We were able to see a fairly close-up shot of my in-laws house. Everything looked much better than expected. Even the bottom walls were still standing.

Also saw a report on topix.com that talked about houses in general....here is an excerpt posted by Jeffery Slanina of Friendswood.....

I just went to Tiki Island by boat. The downstairs portions of all the houses have water damge of appx 3 to 8 ft water intrusion depending on what part of the island you lived on. The upsatirs portions of the houses are appear mostly to be intact and in good shape. some roof damages. all damage is lower store rooms and boats. on the west end and intercoastal side houses the downstairs rooms are totaly gone, only bare stilts remain holding up the living area of the homes. center houses of tiki have water damage to downstairs varying from several feet to appx 8 ft max. Alot of debris around.
Tiki cops will not allow anyone on the island and they chased us off just going around the outskirts on the island taking pictures. so basically in a nut shell. most houses are ok, but the downstairs is wiped out or severly damaged especially on the west end houses and intercoastal houses.
God bless America and all Tiki Residents which include my Brother and his family and my mother which live in the concrete condos at the front on Tiki Island.

my buddies house on Tiki Dr. was extremely lucky. He got a call this morning from a Tiki Firefighter and he reported that his house was extremely lucky with minimal damage. Garage door, and fencing was gone but other than that it was alright. Hope everyone else was as fortunate.

Tiki firsthand

You cannot access by vehicle. I went by boat yesterday.

I have a house on Lotus. With few exceptions, everyone will be in the same boat. Everything downstairs is destroyed. Most docks and piers were in good shape with minimal to no damage. Most staircases were intact. Boats in slings are going to be in bad shape. They rose into the decks in most cases. The exception being very high lifts over 15 feet tall. Lots of boats sunk in their berths.

Some roof damage, siding, chimneys blown off, windows etc. I had a square of roofing and deck blow up with two windows out. Some interior damage and the chimney blew off. Very lucky.

Anything left on the ground level has water in it or is in the canal or a neighbors yard. Many vehicles completely in or partially in the canals. Boats scattered across neighbors yards. They were blading the streets clearing them yesterday. Lots of mud and sand, very slick. Lots of debris in the canals but little in the bay surprisingly. Water pressure is good with lots of broken downstairs piping causing water to spew. Everyone will be rebuilding downstairs. We cleaned out our neighbors fridges and freezers. Some freezers still solid. Pretty confident I had the first cocktail on Tiki post Ike.

All in all its a big mess. A real big mess, but it could be alot worse. We have about an hour of video but I can't put it up. We were lucky its not worse, with power restored, most everyone will be able to reside while repairs are made. Prepare yourself for months of cleanup. You will have two piles-

1. Trash Pile

2. Might try to salvage pile

We really are fortunate for the most part-Tom
