Not too many things take my breath away...but I remember my first trip to the Dome the first year it opened and I was stunned.. Most amazing thing I had ever seen. Had the priviledge of seeing Judge Hofheinz' suite up there as well.. I could have spent a week in there and never seen it all...
Sure will be a shame when the old girl crumbles...
it needs to come down. half a million just to study it? it should take rocket science to demolish it, charge a premium to park a car in its place, and move on. sure, its history, but you can't take it with you when you go.
Betcha the Texas Medical Center Inc..would pick up the demo fees for the ownership..or just use of the land. They have outgrown all their space now...and have the finances to handle it without a worry....
IMO- I wish they would of and could of maintained it years ago and we wouldn't have this problem. Something as fantastic as it was and it could of been another Wrigley Field, old Yankee Stadium and Fenway Park. But as usual money talks! sad4sm
Impressive in it's day but Reliant Stadium and Minute Maid Park are about as nice as it gets for football and baseball. The Dome was never a first class venue except for the Rodeo. It was an awesome attraction and changed stadiums to an indoor option forever. It could have been fixed up but why? It is a dog sitting next to Reliant. It was dolled up for baseball All Star game as nice as I had ever seen it I think in 1980. The Superdome in NOLA is very nice now and not long ago was a total junker. Reliant is a better place to see a game though. I have been to the Dome hundreds of times.
Hard to pay for maintaining an eyesore that they are never going to fix up. I do have many great memories of the place. I followed the perennial loser Astros sprinkled in with some good and exciting years.
They should have converted it into a casino like they were thinking of many years ago. Excellent location to stop the Texas cash from going to Louisiana. It could be worse. Here in San Antonio we have the AlamoDome that has failed miserably at it's task. It sits empty with the occasional football game or home and garden show.
