Since I'm a relatively new 2cooler, just wondering if any member here has ever caught a tagged Redfish, and if so, were they entered in the tournament?

I've been fishing around Freeport all my life (34 yrs) and have never caught one (that I know of, lol) I've caught plenty of reds over the past several years, but never started inspecting them for tags until just a few years ago. Funny story, the very first year I entered the STAR tourny, I caught a tagged redfish in the surf on Bryan Beach. I was stoked and ready to party until by buddy looked at it a little closer and saw that it was merely a TPWD tag. DOHHH!!! Talk about a bummer!

I'd like to see a pic of where exactly the tag is on them too, if possible.

The tag is going to be located near the middle of the dorsal fin, and these fish will, most likely, measure between 21" and 24" in length. I met a winner who caught his in the Galveston Bay area. He was the only winner for that year and a total of 11 were caught. The other 10 DNQ. He was very nice and very low key. He said that he had no idea that he had a tagged redfish until he got home (that night) to clean it and noticed the tag buried in algae. FYI...they release 20 fish in each area of the coast and they release them in areas where they know people are going to be fishing. Remember the companies that donate their prizes want these fish to be caught, the publicity speaks volumes for their business!

I have not caught one of them. But I have seen two of them. The tagged is toward the back of the fish. Up around the dorsal fin. Last year they were red. Easy to spot about 2.5 to 3 inches long. They have a number on them and they say CCA and what year they are. There are several caught years after the tournament is over. What a bummer it would be to catch one this year and realize it was vaild for last year. Not this year.

My son Gary won the Kids Sheepshead division last year $50,000 for school. So our entire family is not eligible for the next 3 yrs. So we get to watch. Good luck to all of you. I agree on the winner being out for a while but not the rest of the family. Hurts the other kids and they did not even win. My young son caught a Sheepshead this weekend that would problay be top 5 or 6 for the year this year. 1st at this point for sure. They changed age groups in 3 yrs. and never get a chance to win the big one. But those are the rules. So we do not agrue. And we are thankful to have won. Great help for school. Thanyou CCA. Take your kids fishing.
