That seems to be a big story down on the coast. Unfortunately I don't know if because of this if many people will be able to rebuild down there. The entire Gulf Coast has dramatically changed. It will be interesting for a few years to see what happens. Looking at the pics I have seem down in Bolivar area the bay almost meets the gulf in many areas. Hopefully most people will be ok.

sure would be cool to have a cut through Sunday beach........bet that would make Fish pond an awesome place.

Any other bottom structure change in POC, or is navigation about the same?

Way back when...

When I first started fishing the POC area, the "major deep" part of Pass Cavallo was from the gulf to the inside of what is now Sunday beach. The land to the left was actually an island called "Middle Ground". It was that way for many, many years.

I have always felt that if even a tiny opening was made, the Gulf herself would keep it open and widen/deepen it. Perhaps if we all got some shovels...LOL!

Some of the most awesome surf fishing I ever did was wading off Middle Ground. We would park the boat on the "back" side and throw Bingos off the "front" and "side" into the pass.

I can remember - before conservation and knowing what we know now - filling 15' stringers from hook to float with 2-4 lb. trout. 100-trout per man (boy) days. Tarpon were common on these outings (at least hooking 'em) and I've seen kingfish, huge sharks, monster jacks, sawfish, ling and even a huge grouper (might have been a jewfish) caught while wading off Middle Ground. Once we had a 14-15' sawfish swim right past us in about 2' of water. This was in the late sixties.

Fish Pond was a major staging area for trout moving in/out of the surf and the tarpon used to make regular visits in their and most late summer mornings you would see some rollers along the front beach from the pass as the tarpon moved towards Saluria.

Ahhhh...the good ol' days..

SnD, there used to be a cut through there, it was called Pass Cavallo and the area now know as Sunday Beach was called the Middle Ground.

It looks to me like a case of nature reclaiming what has always been hers.

Tight lines, Chris

Pass Cavallo

Pass Cavallo is slowly moving northward. The lighthouse was originaly on the north side of the pass. It was disassembled , moved and reassembled at it's current location in the early to mid 1800's. That location was approx. 3/4 of a mile south of the pass at the time. Since the opening of the Big Jetties in the early 60's the movement of the pass has slowed due to the reduction of the amout of water moving through it.

If you are into reading and learning how our coast and especially its barrier islands were formed and continue to change, I highly recommend "Shoreline Ecology of the Gulf of Mexico" published by University of Texas Press. While the work addresses the entire gulf coast, the chapters dedicated to Texas barrier islands and bays are especially well-done and informative. You'll find lots of answers.
