starting butt wraps

when starting butt wraps is each wrap its individual strand. i gave a simple wrap a try and started at the handle end, wraped toward the first eye , stoped after about 7 or 8 inches. made a ful wrap and then wraped the same strand back toward the handle. started over again with the same color, but the layers wouldnt lay next to each other after about 3 or 4. also i am using size D thread, is this to heavy for decorative wraps. should there be an underwrap for these or does it matter? thanks, MIKE

An underwrap will help the cross wrap grip the blank, but I suspect that the rod taper is the problem. The blank outside diameter shrinks as you go up the blank, and that can cause what you are talking about, if your layout has the index thread crosses too far apart...
