That is what the adjuster told me. The final verdict is that my oil pump went down and my sensor that would alert me to that fact went out at the same time. This caused the melt down of 1 & 3 piston and bearings on the crank due to the lack of oil. I guess the hunt is on for my next boat or motors.

Nah, it is a 97 motor. I would go to twins if I go that route. I am going to pick up the boat on Sat I guess and go from there. There are some good deals on newer used boats out there that are hard to overlook before making a decision though.

If you are running through and hit a plastic bag and your heat sensor does not shut the motor down and you blow it due to over heating is the one that I though it was origionally. That would have been covered. I have been told that this happens if you are running full speed and loose water pressure suddenly through an obstruction, the sensor wont read it in time due to the placement of it on the older design OX66

Man i would read my policy close, i had an inboard replaced 2 years ago because the oil sending unit cracked and caused the motor to run low on oil (pumped out into the bilge) What they told me was if it is a part that was not designed as a wear part and it failed they would cover it. Insurance paid for all of mine, i had boaters insurance out of Conroe i believe is where the branch was.

Sorry to hear the bad news. There are some deals out there on rebuilt motors - Blackbird out of Penn for one. If you like the hull, tough to come out money ahead selling it and going with new or new to you. Cheap financing is driving many of the new boat deals though.

I had that exact thing take out the port engine about 5 years ago. Cracked 2 pistons and I dumped 3 gallons of oil in it to get back home. Best of luck on the search for a new one. I went the rebuild route and got a longblock out of Austin.

agree

Being in the marine industry for over 5 years now and working in the service department I have worked w/ many Ins Co. and most of them will replace the powerhead for a alarm failure. I have seen at least two or three for sure. Its not your fault if the alarm did not sound and threw two cylinders , sounds like the adjuster dosent want to pay out .....

Just out of curiosity, did this meltdown occur at WOT? I'm wondering if you can feel/hear the outboard starting to have symptoms like you can an automobile engine. I can usually tell when things are about to go awry when moving along at normal cruise, as things just start to sound and feel different, but have never had a motor seize.

Argo,
Sorry to hear about the ins deal. They try to deny all most everything until you give them enough grief over it. I am still trying to find a crankshaft for mine. Its hard to believe that mercury marine hasnt been able to locate a new or rebuildable crankshaft..... its been three weeks. Anyway enough of my whinning. I hope you get your boat back in order and back in the water soon.
Oh yeah..... when my crankshaft broke(right at the flywheel) I was coming off of a 2-3ft wave and when we bottomed out it just died. no noise or nothing.
there was a little vibration though.
Adios,
Bret
