I am looking at a mid 1970s, 14.5 ft center console Ski Barge brand boat, with a 40 HP Mariner. Looks to be in good shape. The guy wants $900 for it. Anybody familiar with these boats? Are they any good?

Ski Barge

My buddy had one in College. We called it the Sea Frog. Or a better name a bath tub. But I caught more fish out of that boat than you can imagine. He hooked a 6 ft tarpon out of it one time. They were out gunned on boat and tackle but still fought it for 2 hours.

It was a good little rig for a 14.5 footer. For 9 bones I don't think you could go wrong. I think they became Kenner boats. We fished all over POC with it. If it looks solid and that is what you are in the market for, I'd buy it.

There is one in my moms neighbor hood. Not sure of the year. It has a 140 johnson, its a 20 footer. I actually looked at it last year when I was in the market, but can't remember much about it. I do know the price now is 2500.00. Which is lower thatn when I looked at it by about 500 dollars. If you are interested I can get the number for you.

I had one. Good little boats, but wet riding. On a 14' with 35hp and two people, mine would run 32mph and plane out at about 18 mph. Expect the floor to be soft around the screws where the console and battery tray mount to the deck. I't easy to cut out the bad spots and glass in new wood if need be. The rails add much to the hull rigidity and integretiy. If the rails are gone, take a pass on the boat.

i had one several years ago, it was a 15 footer i believe....had some of the best fishing trips of my life in that boat, i too paid 900 bucks for mine, must say, it was probably the best $900 ive ever spent....even landed a 6'8" tarpon in it....those boats have lots of room and i know several people with them, and they have been happy...be ready for a wet ride though...have fun
