Shearwater 2200

Man what a fine boat. I saw some at the boat show last night. There is only one thing negative about them on my mind. I have heard from 1 or 2 people that they are somewhat of a wet riding boat. I am on the verge of purchasing a new boat and this one tops my list. However, I can not stand a wet boat and was wondering if there are any Shearwater owners or people who have fished them that could enlighten me on this issue. Any info would be greatly appreciated. I'm just trying to gather as much info as possible before making a 40k + decision.

a Buddy of mine in Corpus bought the 2200 with a 225 Optimax....it is a sweet [email protected]@ boat, its like a bass boat in that it likes to sit up on its pad to get optimum speed. I will say the 2 times I have ridden in it I got wet when I felt like we really shouldn't of crossing a slight chop..... Take a look at a Haynie21 or 23 if your looking for a awesome riding dry boat, that will get pretty skinny for a vee hull.
Thanks WF. That makes 3 that have told me about the wet ride. Man I just cant seem to find that perfect boat.

Pretty sure your not the only one.
Check out the Blazer Bays. I talked to a few people who work with both the shearwater and Blazers and they all told me they liked the Blazer better. I own a 2220 and stayed dry running across baffin in 3 to 4's.
Whats going on Catch 5 this is Rick Vallone at Ron Hoover Marine, If you would like to go ride in a ShearWater or a Blazer let me know. I have 2 Made ready. Just let me know so I can arange it for you. Cell # 361-765-8012-Office# 281-326-2212 Thanks Rick Vallone
I have spoke with you before Rick. I think I am ready for a test run. I will contact you again.
Sounds Good, I have a 22 Coastal in the water right now, I wont be going to the boat show till 3:00. If your around come buy I will take you out.
dry boat

catch 5 have you tried the majek extreme?
I have looked at the Majek extreme. To be honest with you, I had my mind made up on that boat until I went and looked at it. I do like the Extreme, however, I dont think it is a 40k boat. It is priced fairly close to the Triton, Pathfinder, Shearwater, but the boat is not in the same class. The fit and finish in not even close to these other boats. Granted the Shearwater is a little more, but you get a lot more. The Majek is nice, but I think they could have done a little more to finish it out a little better. Bottom line, if I am going to spend that kind of money on a boat, I am not going to let 5k sway me one way or the other. If I can spend 5k more and get the Ferrari of bay boats (shearwater), then that is what I would do. I am just concerned about the wet ride, so I guess I will just go test drive one and find out for myself.
Those are all nice boats. My new favorite in this kind of hull is the Tran Sport XLR8 low side.
There was a shearwater in the for sale section a while back ago....They are nice arse boats for sure, fit & finish are awsome. I was looking at one till i heard how much they were....
Nothing to add on the Shearwater, but Mosca has caught my eye recently. Talked to a guy that had a 22' Mosca a few weeks ago and he was very pleased with it.

Said he has had it for a little over a year. It sounded like a great all-around bay boat.

The "Ferrari" of Bay Boats is definetley not a Shearwater...

Take a look at a FAST CAT if you are sold on a boat manufactured in Florida...

Makes a Shearwater look like a canoe.

Now your talkin.....

Mosca is as fine of a boat as they get..

And the Customer Service is unmatched....
I have a Shearwater 2200 coastal. I am not familiar with Blazer like I am Shearwaters, Pathfinders, and Blue Waves, but I can say that the Shearwater is about as dry as the Pathfinder and a 22 Classic Blue Wave, maybe just a touch less. In any case, it would be really hard to measure. I spend about as much time in Pathfinders and Blue Waves as I do my own boat. I am also not familiar with the extreme, but the way those things sit so low in the water, you will never convince me that the extreme is a drier ride than the Shearwater....it just can't be. Then again, I think if the chop reaches a certain height, any bay boat is going to let the water in, that's just the way it is.

The rest of the performance and other characteristics of the Shearwater are better, IMO, as compared to the others boats mentioned here. I am not saying that because I own one; I am saying that because that's what I really believe. The finish and the layout of the Majek takes it out of the running, IMO, as compared to the others mentioned here, it's just not in the same class -- (really the pathfinder is the only boat that compares). They all draft about the same and all get up at the same depth, so that's a wash. The Shearwater is particularly nimble as compared to PF and BW's and will hop up onto plane in less time and at less speed (it's like, sick ... 20ft at 10mph)....can't talk about the performance of the Majek or the Blazer (which is a copy of a pathfinder, so can't be that much different than a PF), but would venture to guess the Shearwater performs as good or better.

Another factor that might be of use to you in making your decision, at least it was for me, is the resale value...I think the resale value on a boat like a Shearwater is going to be a bit higher than a majek or a blue wave and even better than a pathfinder. The boats enjoy a reputation for outstanding quality and, unlike even pathfinder, there aren't a lot of them out there. Part of that is the warranty and the way Shearwater backs their product. The continuing service from Shearwater is matched by few other companies.

Feel free to pm me if you have any other questions.

The other boat you might want to look at is the Lake and Bay 22 ft. It's up there with the Shearwater and the Pathfinder.

Sorry, but there is not a boat out there that makes a Shearwater look like a canoe.
