Seat base/mount installation.

1788 Views 14 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  Txfirenfish
The front deck on my boat does not have a seat and I would like to install one but have never cut or drilled fiberglass before and dont know what to use. I looked at the bases at academy was wondering what is best for making the hole. Any help is appreciated.

Jig saw works fine if you have enough room to manuver it also any drill bit will drill through it includeing hole saws. I prefer a roto zip though especialy when working on the console. Just remember measure twice and cut once and remember it is better to cut to small the first time.
Thanks LRM. I didnt know if a regular hole saw would work or not. Was concerned about the possibility of it cracking outwards.
wood bits work great for smaller holes.......just don't try to hurry......applying light pressure will ensure a hole with smooth edges and no cracking.

Good luck!
Make sure you use sealant for the hole and all fasteners. If possible through bolt and use fender washers or a backing plate. recommend the sealant be 5200 or equivalent.
Oh and masking tape the area before cutting with a jig saw.
Use all stainless hardware also. Ditto on the 5200.

Make sure you have the clearance from hatch doors, hinges, deck supports, elec wires, etc before you make any cuts.

Johnny...these work great..all you need is a 1-1/2" hole saw...

Just get the round base...

I have a new Air Ride pedestal in my attic you can have for 20.00...a Good seat will run you about 50.00 @ WalMART

Did that on my boat last year using a hole saw. I just took it slow and easy letting the weight of the drill do the work. No problems at all and I love having something to lean on in the front of the boat.
A suggestion I've seen many times is to begin with the drill in reverse to avoid/minize any chipping of the fiberglass.
Jeff, thanks for the info. I will order the base and take that pedestal off your hands as well. Have never heard of the air rides. Have any info on it?
