I have a 225 Yamaha on a Ranger Bay 2300. Dealer said it would run 60+ (not really interested in that speed anyway). Question is, I run about 41 MPH at 5000 RPM, what cruising RPM should I run for optimum speed? Any have experience with one of these rigs?

Are you saying you get 5,000 rpm at wide open throttle (wot)? If so, you need something different in a prop, plus you are putting undue strain on the motor.

With that said, I would guess that most people consider "cruising" rpm to be somewhere around 4,200 rpms. Whatever your speed is with the proper prop at that rpm is your "cruising" speed.

I can trim up, hit 6000 and get close to 50mph. Whats average for this setup? Is 6000 too much?
With a light load that is probably about right. I don't think you will ever see over 60 with that setup. Not if you are running 41 @ 5k.

Are you asking what is the most fuel efficient cruise speed or what? On my last Yamaha, a 200 VMax, it did real well on fuel if I ran it anywhere between 3500 and 4500rpms. It was on a 22' Pathfinder and I generally would cruise at 4k rpms which was 40 mph in that boat. It would top out at 6200-6300 rpms with a light load which was 60-62 mph.

The dealer misled you on speed. You should be cruising at around 4K RPMs and getting 33 mph or so. What kind of prop are you running?

If it is a newer motor, the computer registers an over-rev limiter situation at 6250 or at least the 200's do. Only a flowmeter or fuel management software/guage will answer your question about most economical speed unless they have tested your specific combination. Look at their website under tests or something like that, I know they have some posted.
